King Holic of the Desert Empty
PostSubject: Re: King Holic of the Desert   King Holic of the Desert EmptySun Jan 15, 2012 6:56 pm

If you ever happened by to the capital of the Dwarven Lagoon, you may notice a few strange things just from their main gate. Rather, unlike many cities who's main gate seems to be based on convenience, the Dwarf Lagoon has seen fit to have their front gate open up to the Holic Desert, named aptly after the "Mad King" Holic himself.

Holic, as the people called him, was a "Mad King" - one of 10 that plagued and or bolstered the rule of the Lagoon.

Before Holic's birth, this desert did not exist as the reader may assume. The barren, cactus-filled dunes were once fertile plains. Which explains how parts of it have common problems with rain and how it is known for its many small oasis that many travelers are thankful for. With the fact of an artificial desert established, we begin to ask how it was done and most importantly - why the Dwarves would build one. In 13BE, Holic was 9 years old and his mother, Dazius, was, encouraging Holic's father Agu into travel. In their adventures, the King was known as the bane of Morwood, recognized by his own people as a Hero even. Yet Holic , as a child, was usually left steward of the Kingdom and stood for his father and mother while they were off travelling.

Holic's early hands-on experienced proved invaluable to his organizational skills as he learned the workings of government. Powerful, yet loyal advisers secured his rule and tutored him on their own respective responsibilities. This was a major factor in the creation of the desert. Eventually, the young prince would become the young King at 19 years old. His rise to the throne at a young age was not that his father - Agu had left them, but by the fact that the King had died on his travels.

Local children might tell you this: Dazius killed Agu. Yet this was not the case. Agu was a reckless man known to run into adventure before planning anything at all. In 3BE he died by running into a lava spill in an abandoned fortress. No malice, no traps - he had died by his own foolishness when he explored blindly through a tunnel.

Holic, in his hatred and denial refused to believed that his great, heroic father could have easily died. No, he blamed his mother. He was never sure of what or why, but he accused his mother of murdering the King.

When Dazius returned with Agu's half-burnt body, Holic entered a state of depression. A week of mourning passed for his father and his eventual 2-day Ceremony of Succession. Immediately after his oath to Kingship, witnesses indicate that his very first order as King was to arrest his mother and condemn her to the mines.

His mother was found mourning on the tomb of his father and a minor confrontation between her bodyguards and the soldiers of the King ensued. The Queen-steward, realizing the situation attempted to escape but was subdued by guardsmen. King Holic was informed of this and ordered the execution of the bodyguards and the parading of his mother to the mines.

The mines were dirty and smelly and were usually the home of the poor who from time to time would come out and beg from the up-dwellers.

His mother was to be banished to the Mines with the poor and starving, he then ordered that the throne room be coated in lava. It was from these two deeds that he became known as "Mad King Holic" to his people.

Three days after his mother was imprisoned in the Mines, The Mad King ordered that all the poor stop eating and that anyone who saw a poor man eat was to beat them. Woe to the Dwarf of that age who endured his rule. Few, if any, beat the poor simply for eating. The social pity felt by the Middle and Upper-class Dwarves protested against the King.

As punishment for subversion, Holic ordered that the farm be moved underground, limited food to twelve pounds a person for a three week period.

He slipped into madness even further when he heard that his mother had escaped with the help of guards that were no longer loyal to King Holic.

Servants, who were still loyal to him, however - reported that Queen-steward Dazius had ran away through the main gate. Holic was furious ordering that half the guards be executed and the other half work as slaves.

King Holic of the Desert Empty

In his madness, he ordered a desert be made around the gate.

"I demand a desert be made," The King decreed "So that no man or woman will escape me again, and that all who try to escape will only find blistering sands!"

The decree forced rich and poor alike for this task. Conditions were horrid and there was no work limit as Holic based the progress of the project on his mood. Only a few, corrupt
bureaucrats kept the state from collapsing entirely.

Years passed and the project went on. Eventually it covered so much of the plains that you could no longer see any green from the walls. There was no longer loyalty to Holic's rule, only fear. Holic's advisers attempted reform and when the Mad King threatened to execute them, the advisers convinced Holic that if the people are kept weak with hunger, they will not rebel but they will also not finish the wall and possibly drive the Lagoon to suicide.

An increase in the food distribution had been implemented and a regular working hour was implemented. As Holic had hoped, they had the energy and strength to continue working regularly. However, it also gave some strength to match their will to fight the Mad King.

The desert was never to be finished. By 50EE, while most of the assassinations have failed from lack of coordination or strength, The Mad King would soon meet his end. Dazius eventually returned, aged but not disheartened. Along with her was a foreign army from a recently formed, nearby nation which called itself Civilization.

When the Dazius' forces met with Holic's Lagoon at the walls, the soldiers of Holic surrendered without a fight. The men and officers of the Mad King welcomed the invaders.

Holic ordered more executions, but no one was obeying. In despair, Holic retreated to his throne room with his most trusted guards and ordered everyone who was with him inside: child, servant, guard or even dog to fight to the death for him.

When the city greeted the return of the Old Queen and her foreign army, she besieged the throne room with tears in her eyes, asking her soon to surrender for 8 hours. As the sun went down, a Civil general named Perrol proceeded to break down the door.

Civil soldiers broke into the room. It is said The Mad King Holic died fighting, calling Dazius' name and daring an old woman to fight him. The battle for the throne room ended with the slaughter of all Holic's elements. A soldier present at the battle reported his last words to be:

"Father..! I'm sorry... My blasted mother lives!"

Dazius took control of the Kingdom for a short time, eventually marrying Orsamer in 52EE who is known for bringing the knowledge in Redstone engineering to the Dwarves. It is said that he in fact hid many rooms in the kings Helsi, one of which is said to hold Dazius's body, as well as all dead queens
